Lansdowne is a small hill station and cantonment town in the state of Uttarakhand. It was developed by the British in 1887 for purveying for Recruits Training centre of the Garhwal Rifles and was named after then Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne.
Lansdowne is an anomaly among the many crowded, noisy and over-commercialized hill stations of North India. It is unusually very quiet despite being the closest hill station from Delhi. We witnessed mostly the same group of people at every place we visited in Lansdowne.
This Lansdowne travel guide will help you plan your trip by providing suggestions on things to do, hotel accommodation, and getting around.
Best Time to Travel
Like any other hill station, the peak season of Lansdowne is from April – June when North India is beating with intense heat. People flock to Lansdowne to get respite from the hot weather. Accommodation prices are also the highest during this period.
Winter months (November – March) are cold and can receive some bouts of snowfall. If you love snowfall, this is a time to visit Lansdowne. Accommodation prices are also affordable during this period.
Monsoon (July – September) are off-season months and receives regular rainfall. This period is also prone to landslides and should be generally avoided.

Mussoorie Express (14041) – It is a sleeper night train and departs Delhi railway station at 10:25 PM and reaches Kotdwara railway station at 6:25 AM.

Lansdowne is one of the places where I really want to go. And, you have given quite a lot of important info about it. I’m glad to see there’s a cute cafe as well. Are there good homestays?
Carol Colborn says
I thought Landsfowne was in the UK. But, of course, it was named after a British officer. Hill stations are nice places to escape the heat in sweltering cities. Good this one has a few attractions especially the historic rifles.
Ann says
So interesting, I didn’t know this existed in Northern India. The British influence is obviously still around. The lake looks like fun!
Nitin Singhal says
Yes Ann, India was a British colony for close to 200 years. So it is natural that there is some British influence in India especially hill stations since most of them are founded by them.
Josy A says
Oooh the views from Tip N Top Point looks fantastic. I always love getting up as high as possible so that is totally my cup of tea! It is just a shame about the food! I hope you find somewhere a bit better next time!
p.s. I do feel sad for those rabbits. They don’t seem too happy trapped in a cage with no greenery! Poor little dudes.
Nitin Singhal says
You will generally find bad food near the attraction. But me being lazy and doesn’t want to go too far just to eat, more often than not fill my tummy with disappointing food.
Natasha says
India is on my bucket list! The culture shock must be crazy!
Aditi Sharma says
I haven’t visited Lansdowne yet but after reading your post I’d love to add it to our bucket list – it looks like such a charming hill station. Good to know that all the main attractions are within easy walking distance from one another. I love the antique, quirky feel of Lansdowne Trip Travel Cafe. Would love to visit Santoshi Mata Mandir – the view of the sunset from there looks incredible. Very informative post.
Nitin Singhal says
Lansdowne is wonderful. It is a quaint and peaceful destination. I am pretty sure you would love it.
Mei and Kerstin says
We’ver never heard of Lansdowne, but it looks quite interesting. How many days do you think one should stay there?
Nitin Singhal says
It is a small hill station. 2-3 days are more than enough to explore.
Summer Austin says
I will be visiting India in a year and it’s great to know about some off the beaten track destinations that aren’t too far from Delhi! The view from Tip N Top looks incredible.
Nitin Singhal says
All the best for your India trip and I wish you have a wonderful time.
Smita says
My brother raves about Lansdowne, it’s his favourite hill station! I’ve never been able to go beyond the typical spots yet, Shimla, Manali etc. Would love to visit Lansdowne on my next trip home.
Nitin Singhal says
I have never been to Shimla and Manalo. Haha
SuBhaSun says
I love snow. Would probably love to visit Lansdowne in winters. Your post would be helpful in planning my trip to the place. Thanks for sharing.
TravelByMaya says
India wasn’t too high on my bucket list, but lately I have been seeing a lot of cool things to do in the incredibly interesting country. Lansdowne looks pretty nice to visit even though I am not a huge fan of cold weather 🙂
Nitin Singhal says
I don’t like winters as well. It gets very difficult for me to bear 2 months of Delhi winter where the temperature never goes below 4-degree Celcius. That’s why I only visit hill stations in summer
Katie Hughes says
This sounds like the perfect spot to escape the heat in Delhi! I love the photos and nik-naks in the Lansdowne Trip Travel Cafe – I’d love to visit.
Linda (LD Holland) says
It would have been nice to find a place like Landsdowne in India that was unusually quiet. Good to know that it would probably be best to have a car to visit. I would want to start with a panoramic view at the Tip N Top Point. But hubby would definitely want to visit the Rifles Museum. I would love to wander around the small local churches.
Nitin Singhal says
You can do all these things in one day. All these places are quite close to each other and can be covered on foot.
Catherine says
I’ve always wanted to visit India and am so intrigued by all the country has to offer! I’m more of an outdoors person so Tip N Top point would be my first choice of things to do in the area.
Nitin Singhal says
So, when are you visiting India?
Jordan says
What a great travel guide! As a fellow blogger, I love the map at the end. What plug-in did you use?
Nitin Singhal says
I didn’t use any plugin. I go to google mymaps and create a map there and then embed it on my website.
Bilal says
Landsdowne looks like such an interesting place. We might consider this place for our trip to India, Thanks!
