Getting to Seoul: Incheon Airport to City Center
Most international travelers arrive at Incheon International Airport, located 45 kilometers from Seoul city center. While Gimpo International Airport is closer (15km), it primarily serves domestic and regional flights.
Transportation Options from Incheon Airport :
Airport Railroad Express (AREX) – Recommended
- Features: Express Train with direct service to Seoul Station. Dedicated luggage storage, and comfortable seating
- Cost: KRW 9,500 (~₹570)
- Duration : 40 – 50 minutes
All-Stop Train
- Features: Cheapest and stops at major subway stations
- Cost: KRW 1,250-4,750 (~₹75-285) depending on distance
- Duration: slightly longer than AREX
Airport Limousine Bus
- Features: Direct service to major hotels and areas. Best suited for travelers with heavy luggage and staying near bus stops
- Cost: KRW 17,000 (~₹1,020)
- Duration: 60-80 minutes (traffic dependent)
Taxi
- Features: Most convenient but expensive option
- Cost: KRW 60,000 (~₹3,600)
- Duration: 45-60 minutes
Getting Around Seoul
Public Transportation
- Subway and Bus: Extensive network covering all major attractions
- Fare: Starting from KRW 1,400 (~₹84)
- T-Money Card: Essential contactless card for all public transport. Works same as EZ-Link Card in Singapore – load money, tap in, and tap out.
Taxi Services
- Apps: Uber and KakaoTaxi are most popular
- Cost: Convenient, time saving but more expensive than public transport
Taxi Or Public Transport
Public transportation might be cheaper but many times you may need to make multiple bus or subway connections to reach your destination, thus increasing the commute time. You don’t want to spend the majority of your day in commute just to save a few bucks. My rule of thumb was to take a taxi if it saved decent commute time and the fare was within the range of 3-3.5x of public transport.
Travel Tip
Google Maps doesn’t work in South Korea – use Naver Map instead

Top Things To Do In Seoul For First Time Visitors
Animal Cafes
Visiting animal cafes is one of the most popular things to do in Seoul for first-time visitors seeking unique Korean experiences. No Seoul travel guide for first time visitors is complete without mentioning this quintessentially Korean experience.
There are many animal cafes in Seoul where you can pet and spend some time with animals. The most common animals in these cafes are cats and dogs but some cafes also have sheep, meerkats, and reptiles.
If you love animals and want to pet them, you will surely have a great time there. You need to pay an entry fee or mandatorily buy a drink to enter any of these animal cafes.
Some of the popular animal cafes are Table A Cafe (reptiles, cats), Sunny’s Dog Cafe (dogs), Meerkat And Friends (meerkat, lemur, cats), and Thanks Nature Cafe (sheep). We visited Table A Cafe and Sunny’s Dog Cafe, and we loved them.

Themed Cafes
Seoul not only has animal cafes but also many themed cafes that are essential in our ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors. Some of the quirky ones are Ddong Cafe (Poop theme), 943 Kings Cross (Harry Potter theme), Witch’s Kitchen (Halloween theme), and Coconut Cafe & Gallery (Bali theme). We visited all of them but we loved Coconut Cafe & Gallery where we got to relax in a mini bungalow, playing video games, and eating sumptuous desserts.

Rent a Hanbok and Visit Gyeongbokgung Palace
For first-time visitors, renting a hanbok and visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace is a must-see Seoul highlight. Our ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors strongly recommend this experience for its blend of history and culture.
There are five palaces in Seoul but Gyeongbokgung Palace is the largest and most popular palace. Many tourists rent a hanbok which is a traditional Korean dress and visit Gyeongbokgung Palace wearing it. We also did that and it was an amazing experience.

There are many hanbok rental shops outside the palace. It costs about KRW 10,000 to 15,000 (~₹600 to 900) for 2-3 hours of rental. Another thing, you get free entry if you are wearing a hanbok.
There are also 1-1.5 hours of free guided tours in English that run 3 times a day (11 AM, 1:30 PM, 3:30 PM). There is also a 20-minute changing of the Royal Guard Ceremony at Gwanghwamun Gate (main gate) at 10 AM and 2 PM. We could not attend it since we visited in the evening but we have heard that it is a must-see.

Buy Skincare Products From Myeongdong
Myeongdong is a must-visit shopping district for first-time visitors looking for premium Korean skincare at unbeatable prices.
Skincare products in Seoul are like grocery items in other countries; you will find skincare product stores every few meters.
Olive Young is Korea’s biggest health and beauty store and you will come across an Olive Young store every few hundred meters in Seoul.
Myeongdong shopping street is the best place to buy skincare products in Seoul. Myeongdong itself has 6 Olive Young stores and one of them is the largest one in Korea.
Apart from Olive Young, there are hundreds of such stores on Myeongdong shopping street. You will get Korean skincare products at least half of what you pay in India.
For cheap but high-quality everyday items – from kitchen and home goods to toys and stationery – head to the Daiso stores where most items cost less than KRW 10,000 (~₹600).
Lotte World

Lotte World is an indoor theme park in Seoul. An ideal stop in our ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors, it comprises four floors where you can enjoy a balloon ride, go-karting, shooting rides, water rides, simulation rides and many other fun experiences. There is also an outdoor section (Magic Island) for adventure rides including many roller coasters.
We had a fun time enjoying many different rides but the day’s highlight was the afternoon parade. Wow, it was the best parade we have seen so far.

Magic Island is surrounded by Seokchon Lake where the annual Seokchon Lake cherry blossom festival is held in April and you may get to see majestic cherry blossoms.

For a truly unique experience, first-time visitors can experience something unique at Coex Aquarium that is not available in any other country in the world. And that is a mermaid show.
Yes, you read it right – A Mermaid show!!
Women dressed as mermaids swim and dance among marine animals inside a huge tank. It is only a 15-minute show but very mesmerizing. The show runs three times and five times daily on weekdays and weekends respectively.

There used to be another aquarium in Seoul called Aqua Planet 63 which was the first aquarium to hold a mermaid show but it was permanently closed in June 2024.
Apart from the mermaid show, Coex Aquarium also holds many feeding sessions – Shark Feeding, Ray Feeding, Penguin Feeding, and Seal Feeding.

Zoolung Zoolung
Zoolung Zoolung is a top pick in our ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors when it comes to interactive animal encounters.

It is an indoor zoo that’s ideal for animal lovers on their first Seoul trip. You not only get the opportunity to get close to birds and animals but also feed them. It is a small zoo and shouldn’t take you more than 1 – 1.5 hours to fully explore it. I had the most fun when Finch and Toco Toucan birds ate food while sitting on my hand.

Cherry blossom season is a bucket-list even for first time visitors to South Korea. April brings beautiful blooms to spots across Seoul, including Yeouido Hangang Park, Seokchon Lake, and Namsan Seoul Tower. Though Jinhae is the most popular place to witness cherry blossoms, Seoul’s cherry blossom sites offer convenient city escapes for those on short trip.
Popular Day Trips From Seoul For First Time Visitors
DMZ Tour
DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is a 250 km long and 4 km wide buffer zone between North Korea and South Korea. Our ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors recommend DMZ tour as a must-do day trip from Seoul. DMZ tour can be booked from here.
This tour takes you to multiple places along the DMZ area. Some of the popular ones are:
- Dora Observatory where you can see North Korean land and villages using many binoculars installed at the rooftop. It would be hard to miss a town with many tall buildings which South Koreans claim as a ‘propaganda village’ or fake village built by North Korea to show their prosperity to the world.
- The 3rd Infiltration Tunnel is one of the many underground tunnels created by North Korea with the sole plan to attack South Korea which never came to fruition. It includes a steep walk so people with mobility issues should avoid going inside the tunnel.
- Imjingkak where you can see a Freedom Bridge which was used to exchange war prisoners between the two countries, a locomotive of the last peace train that crossed the border before the Korean War, and a few memorials dedicated to South Koreans who fought in the Korean War. You can also buy North Korean currency here.

Nami Island
Nami Island is another one of the most popular day trips from Seoul for first-time visitors. This is a very small island that became popular after the Korean drama series Winter Sonata was shot here. There are many walking paths lined with pine and maple trees.

We didn’t find anything worth interesting that may warrant a day trip. But if you take a full-day tour that also covers other attractions like Alpaca World and Gangchon Rail Bike, then that is worth considering.
Our day tour covered both places and we enjoyed both of them. We got to feed Alpacas and see a few birds and animals at Alpaca World. Driving a rail bike on an abandoned rail track at Gangchon was also a new and very fun experience. You can book this tour from here.

Discover Seoul Pass
If you are planning to visit many attractions in Seoul, you may consider buying Discover Seoul Pass – a key recommendation in our ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors. This attraction pass allows one-time entry to many of the Seoul attractions. Physical Discover Seoul Pass also doubles up as a transportation card (same as T-Money) that you can use on buses and metro across South Korea.
Some of the popular attractions included in the pass are Lotte World Adventure, Hanbok Rental, Seoul Tower, Zoolung Zoolung, and Coex Aquarium.
It is available in 3 variants – 24-hour (KRW 50,000 or ~₹3,000), 48-hours (KRW 70,000 or ~₹4,200), 72-hours (KRW 90,000 or ~₹5,400), 120-hours (KRW 130,000 or ~₹7,800).
You may check out the latest prices and attractions here.
Its validity starts from the time of first use and you can avail as many free attractions as you want for one-time use. For example, if you use the 24-hour pass today at 4 PM for the first time for any free attraction, you may continue to use this pass till 3:59 PM tomorrow for entry to free attractions.
Note: Discover Seoul Pass can be used on discounted attractions and as a transportation pass outside the free attraction validity period. The validity only starts when it is first used at any of the free attractions.
Is Discover Seoul Pass Worth Buying?
The answer is both yes and no. This ultimate Seoul travel guide for first time visitors recommends careful consideration before purchasing. Discover Seoul Pass is not cheap; the cheapest available pass is 24 hours and it costs a whopping KRW 50,000. Barring very few attractions, most of the popular attractions are not expensive and do not warrant buying the pass. But if you are visiting those few expensive attractions, then buying a pass may be worth it.
In other words, if you want to visit Lotte World, Zoolung Zoolung, Coex Aquarium, then you may consider buying the Discover Seoul Pass as they are a few of the most expensive activities included in the pass.
Before buying the pass, make a list of must-do attractions and how much they cost (consider prices on Klook, KKday and not official ones) and then compare the total price with the pass price. If the activity’s total price is higher or in the same range as the pass price, then buy the Discover Seoul Pass otherwise it would be wise to book individual tickets online.
Discover Seoul Pass can be purchased from here.
