Chandigarh is the first planned city of independent India and is designed by the Swiss-born French architect, Le Corbusier. It is the capital city of the two Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is the Union Territory of India which means it is ruled directly by the central government of India.
I never understood why my friends who had been to Chandigarh used to go gaga over it until I saw the city with my own eyes. Chandigarh is everything that any other metropolitan city is supposed to be but isn’t. The air is devoid of pollution, roads are broad and clean, no trace of dog, cow, and their dung, greenery everywhere you set your eyes, and no traffic. Chandigarh seems to be an anomaly among the modern cities of India which are polluted and congested.
I fell in love with Chandigarh as soon as I set my foot there. I loved the soothing calmness in the air. Unlike other modern cities where everyone is running against time, time seems to get slow down in Chandigarh. I spent hours sitting at one place in admiration of the beauty of Chandigarh. I stayed in Chandigarh for a weekend only but I could have easily spent days there. Chandigarh was etched in my mind to such an extent that even after coming to Delhi, I missed it for days.
I am not going to bore you anymore with my love for Chandigarh. Coming back to the topic at hand, there are lots of things to do in Chandigarh. You can take a tour to the artistic government buildings and monuments designed by Le Corbusier at Capitol Complex, take a boat ride at Sukhna Lake, get amazed to see sculptures made of discarded items at Rock Garden, and do museum-hopping. Tourists generally spend a day in Chandigarh as a stopover destination en route to Amritsar but that doesn’t do justification to this exhilarating city. I also spent only a couple of days but in the end, it left me wanting for more.
This Chandigarh travel guide will help you plan your trip by providing suggestions on things to do, hotel accommodation, and getting around.

Get Around in Chandigarh
Uber/Ola
Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Ola are not only the most convenient mode of transport in Chandigarh but they are quite cheap as well. You can book both cab and auto-rickshaws through the app. I booked either auto-rickshaw or a uber pool for all my travel in Chandigarh and I never paid more than Rs 70 for any ride. In fact, on a few occasions, the fare was as low as Rs 29.
Bus
There are frequent bus services to most of the attractions of Chandigarh. There is also a CTU Bus Guide mobile app available on Google Play which gives information on bus fare, timings, and routes. Although I found the app very confusing and hard to use.

My experience here was years back when I was in 8th standard and on a school vacation. Rock Gardens is the only place I remember. Anyway, pretty detailed list. Would like to explore the city once again!
Nitin Singhal says
Most people do not even stay for a single night in Chandigarh and leave by just visiting Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake but Chandigarh is worth spending at least two full days.
anshul says
It seems that you love Chandigarh a lot. I haven’t read anything but this city. But it is a nice attempt to highlight every speciality.
Nitin Singhal says
Oh, you are right!! I am absolutely in love with Chandigarh. Where in India you would find another modern city which is clean, green and does not have a problem of traffic jam.
Mirela | The Travel Bunny says
This would make a great trip! I’m particularly interested in the Rock Garden and the wildlife sanctuary. They’re 100% my cup of tea 🙂
Ann (travelgirlto) says
Thanks for adding a map because the first thing I wanted to know was where the city was located. I was in Delhi a few years ago and found it very crowded and polluted. This looks much nicer. The rock garden is beautiful!
Nitin Singhal says
I live in Delhi and even I find it crowded and polluted. I can’t even imagine how a European or American would feel about Delhi. It must come as a cultural shock to him/her. But Chandigarh is amazing; very clean, green and beautiful.
Summer says
I’m planning a trip to India and there are so many places to see it’s very overwhelming! The waterfall at the rock garden is so beautiful that would be a must-do for me. I’d also like to see the rose garden, the butterfly park and maybe the zoo as well — would be cool to see some tigers and lions.
Nitin Singhal says
I hope you include Chandigarh in your list. Best of luck for your India visit. Do let me know how it went.
Jeremy says
There are so much to do in Chandigarh ! I read your other post on Rock Garden, and was very impressed with the efforts behind all the waste recycling and repurposing ! Really hope to visit this one some day ! =)
Nitin Singhal says
Hope you get to visit Chandigarh one day. I am sure you would love it.
Katie says
It looks like you fit in a lot! I’d love to visit to see the Le Corbusier architecture, but now I want to see the caves too!
Nitin Singhal says
Did you mean caves as Rock Garden? Rock Garden is wonderful and reminds you of your responsibility towards the environment.
Vijayanta says
I have been to Chandigarh quite a number of times, It is a rocking city with nice people. Very clean and well maintained.
Josy A says
I have seen your post about the top 5 museums, including the Government Museum and Art Gallery and Rock garden, and they both look ace. It’s great to hear more about Chandigarh. I’d especially like to visit the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.
Calm cities are a nice idea…but i have to admit, I’d be a little sad to visit an Indian city and not see any cows in the middle of the roads!!
Nitin Singhal says
Haha, Josy. I guess India should seriously consider making cow as country’s national animal.
Lena - Rogue Texans says
I had never heard of Chandigarh before, but it sounds wonderful! India has always seemed a bit overwhelming with all of the chaos and traffic. I know that’s part of the appeal to most foreigners travel through India, but it’s always made us feel apprehensive about visiting. But Chandigarh sounds wonderful! We’ll definitely be adding it to the list of places to visit!
Nitin Singhal says
I can understand Lena, you coming from western countries where you are used to fewer people and open spaces and suddenly you are among the huge number of people and chaos and madness everywhere. It can be a bit daunting. The only way of enjoying India is to get mentally prepared that you would get huge crowds, traffic jam and madness. You can’t do any other way.
Mindy Silva says
My favorite is the rock garden. Absolutely stunning!
Carol Colborn says
I have never heard of Chandigarh but being the capital of two states, governed by the central government, and designed by a French architect says a lot…that it is a great city to visit.
SuBhaSun says
I have spent 8 years of my life in Chandigarh. It is the best city to live in India. Indeed a city beautiful. I can’t agree more as I have the similar post about Chandigarh.😊❤️
Nitin Singhal says
Oh, I envy you that you get to spend a good 8 years in Chandigarh. But after living in Chandigarh, how can you even be happy living anywhere in India? I spent only a couple of days there and took me good 3-4 days to adjust back in Delhi.
Sarah says
I’ve not heard of Chandigarh before, but it looks great. I love calm cities and the Rock Garden and the lake look lovely. I’m planning a trip to India again for next year and this is exactly the sort of place I’m looking to visit.
Nitin Singhal says
I am glad that you are coming back to India again. Yes, do include Chandigarh in your itinerary, it would be a good contrast to other places you will visit.
