Top 5 Things to do at Sukhna Lake
There are many things to do at Sukhna Lake for both adults and kids. But I have compiled the list of top 5 things to do at Sukhna Lake for you to have a memorable time.
1) Enjoy the scenic boat ride
You are missing half the fun if you are at Sukhna Lake and not stepping into the lake in a boat. The boating is permitted till the sunset only, and all the rides last 30 minutes.
Many different types of boating options with price ranging from Rs 100 to 400 per person are available. Apart from the peddle boats, all other boats are driven by a professional driver.
a) Peddle Boat
Peddle boat is a self-driven boat. There are two types of peddle boats available: 2-seater boat and 4-seater boat. The 2-seater boat costs Rs 200, and 4-seater boat costs Rs 400 for half an hour. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory. You need to deposit an additional amount as refundable security (Rs 200 for a 2-seater, and Rs 400 for a 4-seater boat) which gets confiscated in case you don’t return the boat in stipulated time.
b) Shikara
Looking at the popularity of Shikara in Dal Lake in Kashmir, Chandigarh tourism has introduced Shikara in Sukhna Lake as well. It can accommodate up to 4 people and costs Rs 200 per person. It is perfect for the couples wanting to experience a boat ride in a romantic setting. Shikara ride in India is as closest experience as you can get to the world-renowned Gondola ride of Venice.
c) Doughnut Boat
Doughnut Boat as the name suggests has the shape of a doughnut. It is the latest addition to the boat roster. It can accommodate up to four people and costs Rs 400 per person.
d) Solar Mini Cruise
This solar powered mini cruise can accommodate up to 25 people and costs Rs 300 per person. It can also be booked for mini parties. It is particularly attractive for those who have not experienced a cruise ride in their life.
e) Luxury Boat
Luxury Boat is a step-up from a mini cruise. It provides a more intimate and personal experience than a mini cruise. It can accommodate up to 14 people and costs Rs 400 per person.
I had ridden a luxury boat when I had gone to Sukhna Lake. I had a mesmerizing experience and felt the intense calmness, doing nothing but gazing the placidness of the water flow amidst the backdrop of the picturesque Shivalik range. The feeling was further amplified in the picture-perfect setting of sunset with an orangish colour flare in the sky.
2) Sit and relax on the rock wall
If you are tired by walking around Sukhna Lake, you can give rest to your legs and body by sitting on the wall made of rocks and looking at the serene Sukhna Lake. It is also the perfect spot to watch the sunrise and sunset.
3) Get your Portrait made
You will see many sketch artists in Sukhna Lake making the portrait of the visitors. You might be wondering why would you pay for a hand-made portrait in this era of digital photography. The hands of an artist can capture even the tiniest of the emotions that might be elusive in digital photography. That’s why people cherish the hand-made sketch more than any photograph. The pricing of a portrait starts from Rs 200.
4) Let your kids enjoy at Amusement Park
There is also a small amusement park at Sukhna Lake. Most of the rides and activities are for kids only but there are some activities for adults also like Virtual Reality, Bumper Car, and Bull Ride. The rides start from Rs 140.
5) Watch the birds
Many exotic birds like Siberian duck and storks migrate to Sukhna Lake in winters. I missed seeing the birds as I had gone to Chandigarh in March when the winter had passed. Must visit Chandigarh between December and February if bird watching is your thing.
Where to eat at Sukhna Lake
There is a small food court next to the amusement park having 3-4 small eatery joints serving Indian snacks and meals and beverages.

It seems like this place has a lot of things to do and fun for families. I especially like the idea that someone can draw your face while you’re posing or setting right in front of them. It’s good to know that luxury boats are available in the country too.
